How to identify a messenger id from his communication with me through a conversation?

A friend of mine communicated by Yahoo! Messenger in a conversation, but had signed out before I returned to my computer. I am unable to find his name on my contact list, and as I do not know know either his email address or Messsenger ID, how do I communicate with him? Thanks, John Spencer.
